Do You Have a ‘Responsive’ Website?
What animals change shape? A caterpillar turns into a butterfly. A tadpole turns into a frog. This process is called metamorphosis. Does your website have the ability to change shapes? Is it responsive?
What is a responsive website you ask? A website that contains responsive web design (RWD), one that is able to adapt and ‘respond’ to the device that it is being viewed on. Part of that adaptation is to disassemble all its pieces – content and images – and make a different ‘shape’. How many possible ‘shapes’ are there – well to start with there is the iPhone, iPad, Smartphone, Tablet and Phablet and I am sure there are and will be more. For the user to view your website properly and be able to navigate with ease, you must have a responsive website or it will be so hard to view the user will close your website and move onto one that is – one that belongs to your competitor.
“Wonder Twin powers activate!” Do you know what comes next? Form of water…..shape of an eagle……Is your website able to take on different shapes? Is it a responsive website?
Why do you want people to look at your website in the first place? Of course to interest them in the products or services you offer and encourage them to spend their hard-earned money with you rather than with your opposition. A website is an excellent form of advertising, one that cannot be underestimated or under-valued when creating one for your business. Your website becomes the face of your business. People are educated enough these days, when it comes to the world of technology, to know if they are looking at an old website or one that not much thought or money went into. Is that how you want people to see your website, and the owners – cheapskates? Not likely.
The use of mobile devices such as phones and tablets being used to surf the Internet rather than a personal computer is skyrocketing. Sales of phones outstrip that of desktops, laptops and netbooks. Tablets are fast catching up. Are you amongst these ones? Probably you are. But have you looked at your website from a Smartphone or iPhone? Go on try it. Just grab it; it’s probably within arms-length or in your pocket! Does your website look exactly the same as it does on a desktop or laptop but only smaller? If you answer – Yes – then you do not have a responsive website and you need to update.
What does it take then to have a responsive website? Custom coding by someone who knows what they are doing. Each device has its own resolution, each device needs its own coding. This coding enables the information your website contains to ‘change shape’ to cater to these various devices. The team at TBA Media are experts in the field.
If you go and Google ‘responsive websites’, on my netbook the Wikipedia site came up first. I looked at it and stopped reading after about 6 lines. The second listing gave a brief definition and then a heading ‘Creating Your Own Responsive Design’, followed by lots of numbers, symbols and letters showing you how to do it yourself, and then at the bottom – Try it yourself >>, then it says ‘Using Bootstrap’. OK stop right there. If you have one iota of what they are talking about then you are in the wrong industry and need to be in web design. If you are like me, I just looked at it and then all the numbers and symbols swirled together. The Internet has an abundance of tutorials, YouTube videos and step by step instructions on how to do it yourself. If it was that easy then why are you reading this?
Did you have Lego when you were small? If you had 100 pieces, how many different shapes could you make? Heaps. Does your website change shape? Is it responsive?
Responsive website design is a skill, and do not imagine it is learnt by just going to a few night school classes or reading a few books or websites. It is another language. A computer language with its own nuances and rules to follow in order for the website to behave and respond correctly. The team at TBA Media pride themselves in their ability to provide a seamless service of website creation with RWD. It has become an essential part of today’s world. An unavoidable fact – unfortunately. Why? It means that you need a website that is responsive. If you like your website’s current ‘look’ that’s OK, then the back-end needs adjusting. If your website is 7 years old (that’s 2008) or more, then you probably need a fresh look anyway. So bite the bullet and get a responsive website happening. You won’t regret it. The time and resources you use will not be wasted but are a valuable investment in attracting new clients.
What should a chameleon and a website have in common? It should adapt to its surrounding. Does your website adapt to its surroundings? Is it responsive?
